Cats decide when it's time to pet them.

Cats don't really ask to be pet, they just show up and make it happen. One minute they're minding their business, the next there's a head pushing into your hand like, okay, you're up. You're now on petting duty whether you planned for it or not.

They've got their own method. A head bop, a tail wrap, maybe a full body lean like they're trying to merge with you. If you don't react, they'll try again, a little stronger this time. Very purrsistent. They're not subtle, but it works.

Once you start, you're locked in. Stop too soon and you'll get the look. Or a paw tapping your hand like, keep going. Sometimes they grab your hand and move it to the exact spot they want. It's very specific. They know what they like and expect you to get it right.

Then it's over. They step away, sit somewhere else, or walk off like nothing happened. One second you're essential, the next you're dismissed.

They got what they came for, and that's all that matters.

Sometimes cats will just bite you a little while you’re petting them. It’s not a real bite, more like a quick love nip. One second everything is calm, the next there’s a tiny chomp like they’re reminding you they’re still in charge. It doesn’t mean stop, it’s just part of it. We have hands for one reason, to pet the cats. That’s basically the job. They show up, sit next to you, and expect you to use them properly. You could be doing something else, but that doesn’t really matter. Once a cat is there, hands are no longer yours, they’re on petting duty. Might as well accept it and do it right.

If there was one superpower to pick, it would be reaching through the screen to pet every cat you see. Just scrolling and suddenly you can give a quick head scratch or a little chin rub. No limits, no distance, just instant access to all the cats online. It would solve a lot, honestly. Every cute cat gets the pets it deserves, and no one has to just sit there wishing they could.
